'Windows Azure’ To Be Branded As 'Microsoft Azure'

Microsoft will rebrand "Windows Azure", the cloud operating system to "Microsoft Azure”. This has been announced today, i.e. March 25 and will be effective starting April 3, which happens to be Microsoft's Build conference in San Francisco.

It is a valid ploy by the management of Microsoft to rebrand given the fact Windows Azure isn’t necessarily all about Windows. Customers of Azure can also make use of Linux in virtual machines as a part of this operating system. Oracle databases and middleware can be run on Azure using Java, PHP, Ruby and Python as tools for development.

From 2008, Windows Azure was called as "Red Dog," and at this time the message from Microsoft meant that Windows Azure was a cloud version of Windows Server. This philosophy has been at the heart of Microsoft's cloud messaging.

As of 2012, there was a bit of confusion as soon as Microsoft removed the word "Azure" from its portal of cloud billing. At that moment, the officials at Microsoft stated the company had no intention to carry out a rebranding exercise of 'Windows Azure'.

As on today, despite Windows still being critical to Microsoft, the organization is highlighting its not just Windows. Marketing officials at Microsoft are occupied to re-position Microsoft as a cross-platform software provider. Another example of this new brand positioning strategy by Microsoft is evident from their launch of Microsoft's Office on iPad suite, which is expected on 27th March.
