Ritz Club Casino sue self-excluded billionaire for $2m losses
Safa Abdulla Al-Geabury, who signed a self-exclusion order in 2009, lost £2 million at the Ritz Club in London.
The incident took place on February 19th 2014 and the billionaire managed to lose that amount in just less than two hours playing roulette.
However now London Clubs International owned casino has taken Safa to High Court as check he signed that night was returned unpaid.
The casino now intends to reclaim the outstanding balance, plus an extra £200,000 in interest by taking the gambling act to court.
But Safa Abdulla Al-Geabury argues Mayfair’s Ritz Club that the blame lies with the casino as he only allowed to access to his gambling funds after the casino gave him match tickets for Arsenal vs Bayern Munich at the Emirates stadium in London, proceeding to give him a £5 million gambling credit line straight after.
Safa Abdulla Al-Geabury said:
“[A casino representative] asked why I was not coming to the Ritz Club. He then suggested I should go to the Ritz Club and said my style of play was very attractive. I told [the man] I was a problem gambler and that I had limited my access to my own money for that reason. He said access to money was not a problem and I would be provided with credit of up to £5million, which I could pay back when I liked.”
The 52-year-old’s counsel Kevin Pettican argued that The Ritz Club was in breach of its own gaming license terms by virtue of giving credit to the self-excluded problem gambler.
He also went to state it the casino bore responsibility in exerting “undue influence and unconscionable transaction”.
In addition, a counter claim for £5.4million was filed against the Ritz Club, depicting the amount of cash Safa lost gambling at the casino between October 2010 and February 2014.
As part of procedure, the honorable court has directed psychiatrists to evaluate the degree of the Swiss national’s gambling addiction, and whether it was notable enough for the casino employees.
