Russia on the verge of criminalizing online poker

The possibility of Russian market opening up to international players appears very slim. The lower house of the country, this month, passed a bill preventing citizens from playing online poker outside of Russia's 4 selected areas.

The bill will now move to the upper house, and if it gets the nod of approval, will see violators get huge fines along with jail time.

However, earlier in 2014, Russian legislators hinted at opening avenues to foreign operators, as they felt opportunities to generate revenues by letting the online gambling industry flourish. But since then, the government has taken a U-turn.

If the new bill is passed and it becomes a law, playing online poker within Russian borders would be deemed as a criminal offense, with exception of 4 designated areas.

Defaulters could face a fine up to 500,000 ruble or 2-year imprisonment. Illegal online gambling operators will also face fines of millions of rubles, and 7-year jail term.

The new proposed laws have been termed as draconian by industry experts. However, it remains to be seen how and when these gambling laws will be implemented by the Russian state and what is the reaction of poker players in the country.
