Romania reduces gambling taxes; permits operators to offer online poker

It indeed is a very Happy New Year for Romanian poker players as their government amended laws to reduce taxes on winnings from gambling.
After the new law was passed by the government, the 25% tax rate from 2014 now only applies to players that have won over €100,000. 1% has been determined as the tax rate for the minimum winnings. While, player winning in excess of €15,000 will now have to pay 16% as tax.
The laws before being amended this week were first introduced in 2012. But there was wide consensus of them being insufficient. With he EU Commission filing a complaint of breached treaties, operators failed to apply for licenses.
Now that the 2012 gambling laws have been amended, fees applicable on licenses have dropped. Hence offshore operators can now get licenses at affordable prices.
In the last year or so, regulators have been in overdrive preparing list of gambling operators that have breached the country’s laws. These operators have now been handed a one-year penalty delay until they can approach the authorities for a license.
Romania it appears has adopted a policy just like Bulgaria, another EU state that has decreased taxes on gambling operators with effect from 2014. Their decision witnessed a spurt in poker rooms applying for licenses.
